Thoughts On Various Things...

...and completely meaningless.

1. I'm glad the debates are over. These guys, after 16 months, are merely wind-up dolls spouting the same platitudes, talking points, and news bites. I have yet to see a genuine human deviation from those talking points. No unrehearsed personal comments or anything resembling a warm off-the-cuff detail on "who" they are as persons. This goes for both of them. Where is the humor, where is the spontaneous reflection. They are both "handled" to a degree that removes their ability to say anything that is not scripted. Blech!

2. Brendan mentioned the possibility of seeing my grandkids in December, and that's all I can think about. But how?

3. Speaking of grandkids, Matt, my buddy from KCA called a couple of weeks ago and wondered if I'd like to be a Reading Partner with one of his 6 year olds at Nielson. I quickly said yes, but then checked my schedule. I'd have to leave at 8:30 in the morning to be there at nine, and then kill time for Blick at 11:00 o'clock. The library was an option to kill the time, but I forgot that my dog would be inside for 8 hours before relief could arrive with Richard across the street when he gets home from school. Figured it was too long, so sorry Matt.

4. I haven't watched ONE baseball playoff game this Fall from start to finish. Was a time I wouldn't have missed any of them. Wonder why?

5. Attended Jane Simmons' funeral this morning. Nasty, gloomy day. She lived for 95 years (and I have been laid off from mowing her yard) and by all accounts it was a good life. I go into work and one of my favorites just returned from time off for her Dad's death of a brain tumor (same thing Ted Kennedy has). He was 57, and to hear her talk of various things made my eyes well up. Especially to hear about the relationship he had with his grandkids. Also the letter she wrote to him and read to him shortly before his death. Wow. Whoever you have around you give 'em a big hug and tell 'em you love them. Go on!! Do it, I'll wait till you get back.

OK, you back?

6. Went over to brother Phil's place on Saturday. Phil and Jeanne have a great place, and truly enjoyed the fire, hot dogs, and smores. Fires on a cool crisp Fall night are wonderful.

7. Wolf Blitzer is a piss poor host/moderator.

8. Heard this on the radio: people buying into the market right now are the next millionaires.

9. Next Sunday is the Lumberry Tour. Members of the Western Illinois Antique Auto Club take off in our old cars, usually to Henry Illinois to see the fall foliage and the large wind farms in that area, then end up at Tanner's Orchard. Great place but usually crowded as Hell. I usually take a pan of Rice Krispie treats: they have come to expect it, so may try to make some on Saturday.
Gonna buy those cider doughnuts, and maybe some jam, and maybe a gourd or two to spruce up the place.

10. The Wire, an HBO series, has been fun watching. I don't have HBO but have been getting it through Netflix. Watch an hour when I go to bed. Stopped reading for a couple of months.

11. Mark and Holly, don't forget that movie recommendation I gave you on Saturday, October Sky.

12. Both my fantasy football teams lost on Sunday/Monday.

13. Speaking of football, tough loss for the Bears.

14. Tomorrow I'm posting a YouTube video on ghosts and goblins. Spooky. Reminds me of what Nancy, Kenzie, someone-who-shall-be-nameless, and I did on Halloweeen a few years ago. We went to a couple of local graveyards at night with our cameras hoping to get a shot of a ghostie-ghost. We didn't. That we are aware of.

15. Its getting colder and darker riding the bike home after work. Don't like riding in the dark, too many deer around here, so I may be taking the truck more often now.

Summer Swim

It's Monday and the start of another work week.  Except for me.  I have the week off because the parents of my daycare charges are taking the week off, too. This is one of those wordless posts I love on Mondays so I can put my laziness in full view of loyal readers.  These pics need no words.  Why muddy the waters?   They were taken at the pool at Sinkhole Estates aka Death Valley.  The nice thing about this pool is it is heated in winter.  If one must find positives in one's situation, I suppose that is one.  But, please, no more.

Flashback Friday

Class, Or Lack Thereof The Dwight Vice gravestone in Oquawka, Illinois. I bring this old chestnut out every so often just to remind me that class is classless.  Dwight Vice was killed in his home near Oquawka in 2001.  It was one of those things that can generate crime:  two guys thought Dwight had a lot of money stashed at home because of his pot-selling sideline to supplement his fishing job.   Not really one of those big drug deals gone-bad things.  Marijuana was, according to the trial, about the only stuff Dwight sold.   But these two guys barge into the house and killed Dwight and attempted to kill his 11 year old kid, Darryl, before they took off with what money they could find.   His son, now 23, was stabbed in the back and left for dead.  He survived and is wheelchair bound and has undergone several surgeries to repair his wounds.  He will be paralyzed for life.   None of this is pleasant.  Reading the facts of the murder and attempted murder are most unpleasant
