One of my Northlandia pleasures is to drive to the levee at Keithsburg or new Boston and take shots of barges going by. There are lots of reasons. Out and about at night (or more accurately early morning) is always enjoyable. Nighttime heightens the senses. Its a kick of adrenaline. You against night. You with night. I can better explain with beer. Buy me beer and I'll tell you all about it. But I digress. Another reason is I have a fancy ass camera that thinks its smarter than me. Well, it is. But I'm not surrendering. The problem is quite simple. A camera has time settings. How much time do you want to leave the shutter open. The longer you do it, the more light gets in. And if you are shooting a moving object, that object will imprint itself moving. And that means it will be blurred. So the question becomes how do you photograph a moving barge at night? You need to be shutter-quick enough so it won't blur, yet long enough to capture light.
It is a math and engineering problem that I want to master. Oh, I suppose I could put the camera on AUTO, but that would cheating, right?
